THE COURSE

Organisational certification within the field of yoga is a topic fraught with confusion, mis-information and fear.  We hope to dispel some of the myths that surround it and present the current picture as it stands in the UK.

Firstly, it is important to note that there is no governing body for Yoga in the UK, however, this is not to say that some organisations do not claim to be such a body.  As such, all teacher training courses are self awarding and self regulating.

So how do you choose a course that is suitable for you?  There are so many out there, all with a criteria that has to be met in order to join 'their club'.  Our advice is that you communicate with a teacher who instructs in a style of yoga that you are particularly drawn to.  Speak to them, ask questions, do everything you can to find out if they walk their talk and practise what they preach.  It is only by doing this you will find the right teacher and the right course.

As activists in positive education for all, we support transparency in organisations, so that if a training body is heavily influenced, or makes unsubstantiated claims, then people have a right to know so that they can make an informed decision about the true aims and ethos of that organisation.

We welcome questions and feedback from all potential students about Pure Yoga Teacher Training before embarking on our course. We will have expectations of you, so it is only right that you should have expectations of us.

Some important questions to consider:

  • Will I be able to teach yoga after completing this course?

  • Will I be able to get insured to teach yoga after completing this course?

  • Is the tutor qualified in teaching?

  • Is the tutor insured to teach me?

  • Am I insured to practise teaching whilst undertaking this course (under supervision)?

  • Is the tutor qualified to assess me?

At PYTT, our answer to all these questions is, yes! If you have any more questions then please contact us.

COURSE AIMS

The aim of this course is to teach you the skills necessary to become a yoga instructor, to teach Hatha Yoga in the Astanga Vinyasa style, in a safe, effective and appropriate manner.

There are three main aspects to becoming a Yoga teacher:

Your individual practise

Our aim is to ensure that your own asana practise is exceptional so you can effectively 'walk your talk'.

Teaching skills

Strong emphasis will be placed on acquiring the necessary teaching skills to allow you to become an outstanding teacher.

Yoga instruction as a career

With yoga classes popping up all over the place, opportunities have never been greater.  We will give you with the information needed to 'get out there' and teach, as well as provide you with marketing techniques and help on how to approach clubs and local authorities in order to acquire your own classes.  We will also look at legal requirements such as Public Liability insurance and music licenses.

PRINCIPAL TUTOR

Pamela Young, MA (hons) is the principal tutor on this course. As already stated in her biography, she has been studying, practising and teaching yoga for many years.

The content and structure of this course has been drawn up based on Pamela's own yoga experience, along with her extensive experience in the health and fitness industry. As well as holding a Single Honours Degree in Philosophy from Glasgow University, she holds many certificates for teaching including SYTA Teacher Training - Foundation, Hatha Yoga Astanga Vinyasa Style, Fitness Pilates, RSA Certificate in Teaching ETM, YMCA ETM, YMCA Aqua ETM, YMCA Step ETM, BTS BodyCOMBAT, BTS BodyPUMP, BTS BodyATTACK, BTS BodyJAM, BTS BodySTEP, BTS BodyBALANCE, BodyMAX, Group Cycle Instructors Track (QFF), Advanced Instruction Module (Fitpro), Fitkid Health Related Fitness for Children and YogaBugs.  Pamela is a qualified YMCA A1 Assessor in health-related exercise and fitness and has also attended BTS Assessors Module Training, BTS Group Fitness Management Module Training.

All this experience will be available to provide students with a complete education in the many different aspects that make up a 'professional' yoga teacher.

ASSESSMENT

In order to establish and maintain a high standard of professionalism, students will be assessed throughout the course and given regular feedback. This will ensure that any issues that arise will be addressed during the course. The final practical assessment will be carried out by Pamela along with an external examiner. As part of your ongoing training, you will have to shadow/observe and established yoga instructor for 20 hours. Furthermore, you will be given written assignments to complete, to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the theory being conveyed during the course.
